Sports massage may be of 3 types: Pre-event - Inter-competition - Post-event
Pre-event massage focus stimulating-+-superficial-+-fast-paced-+- rhythmic - 10-15 minutes - circulation , general non-specific, light and warming. Avoid frictions
Pre-event massage contraindications techniques that are painful or require recovery
Pre-event massage emphasis on muscles used in sport
Pre-event massage goal athlete should feel that his/her body is perfect, physically
Inter-competition massage focus Short->light->relaxing decrease acute muscle soreness
Inter-competition massage goal Prevent DOMS (micro-tearing) - decrease acute muscle soreness, that quickly develops in over exercised muscles due to high lactic acid deposit in the tissues.
Can DOMS be prevented? YES! if relaxing massage received within 2 hours after event. - Long relaxing effleurage strokes.
Post-event massage goals? > reduce muscle tension - > minimize swelling and soreness - > encourage relaxation - > reduce recovery time
Post-event massage techniques? Related to assessment finding
What are the benefits to athletes of regular massage? less restriction, accelerates recovery time. Enhance well-being.
