Bering Land Bridge and nomadic hunters The Bering Land Bridge was entrance into America for nomadic hunters.
2. Incas, Mayans, Aztecs Among the earliest Americans, these three groups were found in Peru (Incas), Central America (Mayans), and Mexico (Aztecs). Each of these civilizations had advanced agricultural practices, knowledge of astronomy, and thriving cities.
3. Pueblo people and corn cultivation- Located in the Rio Grande valley, the Pueblo people had intricate irrigation systems and vast cornfields.
A successful group of people who built many pueblos, cultivated maize, practiced and “three-sister” farming. Ohio Mound Builders
Iroquois location and Iroquois Confederacy The Iroquois were located in the northeastern woodlands; the Iroquois Confederacy developed organizational and political skills which they used to maintain military alliances with other Indians and Europeans.
Christian Crusaders Their goal was to take away the HOly Land from teh Muslims
7. Portuguese in sub-Saharan Africa The Portuguese set up trading posts in sub-Saharan Africa which they used to obtain gold and slaves. They also set up sugar plantations and adopted African and Arab practices.
8. Slavery and sugar plantations The slaves that were captured along the African coast were often used to work the sugar plantations.
9. Nation-states, Renaissance, printing press Nation-states were taking form in Spain and were used to conquest and colonize. The Renaissance brought about optimism and a desire for adventure. The printing presses were used to spread scientific knowledge.
Christopher Columbus’ failure-success Christopher Columbus failed in the way that he was unable to discover a water route to the Indies. However, his success came when he accidently discovered new continents, which led to the exploration of Europe, Africa, and the two Americas.
11. Columbian Exchange The New World sent gold, silver, crops, and Syphilis to the Old World, the Old World sent animals, crops, and horrible diseases to the New World, and Africa sent slave labor to the New World.
12. Treaty of Tordesillas treaty divided profits found in the New World between Spain and Portugal.
13. Conquistadores “Conquerors” who sought out new lands.
Ferdinand Magellan He completed the first circumnavigation of the glove.
15. Juan Ponce de Leon He explored Florida.
16. Francisco Cornado and Province of New Mexico He discovered the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River and wandered throughout the Province of New Mexico. He found the Pueblo Indians.
17. Hernando de Soto He set out on a gold-seeking expedition and discovered and crossed the Mississippi River near it’s joining of the Arkansas River.
18. Encomienda system was basically a form of slavery in which the government gave Indians to colonist and, in return, the colonist would Christianize the Indians.
19. John Cabot (England) He explored the northeastern coast of North America.
20. Verrazano, Cartier (France) He probed the eastern seaboard.
21. Spanish province of New Mexico In the province of New Mexico, Roman Catholic missions were established.
22. Roman Catholic missions Were used to Christianize Native Americans
23. Pueblo (Pope’s) Revolt 1860 An Indian uprising in which the Pueblo rebels killed priests and Spanish settlers as well as destroyed every Catholic church located in the province.
24. California Was the location of a chain of twenty-one missions let by Father Junipero Serra.
