Shoulder muscles
muscles of the shoulder girdle, arm and related
term | definition |

deltoids | muscles that cap the shoulder and proximal half of the arm |
middle deltoid | performs abduction of the shoulder |
posterior deltoid | performs extension, lateral rotation of the shoulder |
anterior deltoid | performs flexion and medial rotation of the shoulder |
latissimus dorsi | widest muscle of the back region |
teres major | perform medial rotation, adduction and extension |
rotator cuff muscles | stabilize the glenohumeral joint |
supraspinatus | rotator cuff muscle originating in the supraspinous fossa and inserting in the greater tubercle of the humerus |
infraspinatus | rotator cuff muscle originating in the infraspinous fossa and inserting in the greater tubercle of the humerus |
teres minor | rotator cuff muscle originating in the lateral border of the scapula and inserting in the greater tubercle of the humerus |
subscapularis | rotator cuff muscle originating in the subscapular fossa on the anterior surface of the scapula and inserting in the lesser tubercle of the humerus |
coracobrachialis muscle | originates from the coracoid process of the scapula and inserts in the middle shaft of the humerous |
pectoralis major | large muscles across the chest |
pectoralis minor | lies under the pectoralis major and attaches to the ribcage |
