deviated shape:wind condition,usually relating to liver
curling under shape:heart def
curling up shape:heart excess
long shape:heat usually in the heart,tongue usually red too
short shape: cold condition (cold contracts)
body color description normal,red,pale,purplish,sublinqualveins
body color indicates hot/cold,yin/yang def and stagnations
normal body color:brigh,pale red
red body color: heat
pale body color:cold or blood def
purplish body color:blood stagnation
sublingual veins normal body color:same as underside of the tongue,thin and slightly blue like the veins on the wrist
sublingual veins swollen,engorged,purple body color: blood stagnation
coating descriptions normal,thickness=thick or absent or peeled,color=yellow or white
normal coating this white even and well rooted. normal byproduct of digestion, dirty dampness sent up from stomach.
thickness of coating indicates strength of pathogen, or degree of deficiency
thick coating:excess condition
absent/peeled coating:deficiency(yin deficiency)
yellow coating:heat
white coating:cold
moisture reflects state of the body fluids. normal tongue is moist
moisture description dry or wet
dry moisture:dry condition,deficiency of fluids in body
wet moisture:excess of fluids in the body
surface features-3 divisions look at from only one perspective at a time, not all three methods in one viewing.1specific organ,2three burners,3movement of pathogen

exterior skin,muscles and channels-reflected in front 1/3 or edge of tongue.in exterior conditions tongue coat may be more concentrated in these areas.

yang tongue coating not important in diagnosing of yang deficiency only important if accumulation of dampness because of yang deficiency
