TermDefinition
Nucleus The brain. Instructions for everything a cell does
Cytoplasm Gel like material. Holds the organelles in place. Contains hereditary material
Mitochondria Releases energy stored in food
Smooth endoplasmic reticulem Folded membranes where materials are processed and moved around
Rough endoplasmic reticulem Folded membranes where materials are processed and moved around
Golgi bodies Flat stacked membranes. Sorts proteins and packages them into vesicles
Cell membrane Outer covering. Lets nutrients in, releases waste and keeps bad things out.
Ribosomes Protein making structures. Made in nucleolus. Receives directions from DNA
Nucleolus Produces ribosomes
Lysosome Recycles. Breaks down food, waste, and worn out parts
Chloroplast ONLY IN PLANT CELLS. Makes food
Cell wall ONLY IN PLANTS, ALGAE & FUNGI. Tough rigid outer covering. Protect cell and give shape
Cell The smallest unit capable of performing life functions
Tissue Group of similar cells that work together to do a job
organ A structure made up of two or more types of tissues that work together
Organism Any living thing
homeostatis The ability to keep proper conditions inside no matter what is going on outside
DNA Contains the genetic instruction for all living organisms
Eukaryotic Cells that make up membrane bound structures that include plants, animals, and you
Prokaryotic Cells that don't make up membrane-bound structures such as bacteria (one celled)
Cell Theory (3) 1. All organisms are made up of one or more cells. 2. The cell is the basic unit of organization in organisms. 3. All cells come from cells.
