What does the nutrition facts panel provide? Specific information about a food's serving size, calorie value, nutrient content and ingredients.
What does the nutrition facts panel highlight? Fat, saturated fat, trans. fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrates, dietary fiber, sugars, vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium and iron content within a serving of food.
What are daily values based on? Recommended Dietary Allowances
DV% of 5 or less is considered what? Low
DV% of 10 to 19% is considered what? Good
DV% of 20% or higher is considered what? High
What does it mean for the front of a package to state "fresh?" Foods are raw, not frozen or heated, and contain no preservatives.
What does it mean for the front of a package to state "healthy?" No more than 60 mg. of cholesterol, 3 grams of fat, and 1 gram of saturated fat; more than 10% of DV of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Iron, Calcium, Protein, or fiber. Must also contain less than 360 mg. of sodium.
What does it mean for the front of a package to state "extra lean?" Fewer than 5 g of fat, fewer than 2 g. of saturated fat & trans fat combined, and fewer than 95 mg. of cholesterol (applies to meat only)
What does it mean for the front of a package to state "lean?" Fewer than 10 g of fat, fewer than 4.5 g of saturated fat & trans fat combined, and fewer than 95 mg of cholesterol (applies to meat only)
What does it mean for the front of a package to state "free?" No-or negligible amounts of; fat, sugars, trans fat, or sodium.
What does it mean for the front of a package to state "good source?" From 10 to 19% of the DV for a particular nutrient or for Vitamin A, Vitamin C, or Vitamin E
What does it mean for the front of a package to state "high?" 20% or more of the DV for a particular nutrient.
What does it mean for the front of a package to state "low cholesterol?" 20 mg or less cholesterol
What does it mean for the front of a package to state "low fat?" 3 g or less of fat
What does it mean for the front of a package to state "low saturated fat?" 1 g or less of saturated fat
What does it mean for the front of a package to satate "low sodium?" 140 mg or less sodium
Natural, all natural, pure, antibiotic-free, raised without antibiotics, additive-free, pesticide free, hormone free, nutritionally approved, no cholesterol (on plant foods), free range, eco friendly and pasture fed are all examples of what? Claims not approved by the FDA for use on food labels.
