IMR, TFR, overpopulation

Define Total Fertility Rate(TFR). average number of children a woman will have throughout her childbearing years
Would the TFR become lower or higher in a MDC?Why?. lower, because women and men are more educated about contraceptives
Define Natural Increase Rate(NIR). percentage of growth of a population in a year
How do you find NIR?. crude birth rate minus the crude death rate
Define physiological density. number of people per unit of area of arable land
Define medical revolution. medical technology invented in Europe & North America that is diffuse to the poorer countries of Latin America, Asia, & Africa
What did the medical revolution do?. improved medical practices & have eliminated many traditional causes of death
Define life expectancy. average number of years a person can be expected to live, given current social, economic, & medical conditions
Around what age is the U.S's life expectancy? Japan?. U.S-79 Japan-85
Define ecumene. portion of Earth's surface occupied by permanent human settlements
Define zero population growth(ZPG). decline of total fertility rate to the point where the natural increase rate equals zero
What stage of demographic transition is ZPG applied to?Why?. stage 4 because their crude birth rate & crude death rates even out
Define sex ratio. number of males per 100 females in the population
Explain why the ratio of males is greater than the ratio of females at younger ages, but becomes lower than females at a higher age. more males are born than females but have a higher death rate because men take more dangerous jobs than women
Define population pyramid. bar graph representing the distribution of population by age & gender
What two things represent a population pyramid?. age and gender
Define pandemic. disease that occurs over a wide geographic area & affects a very high proportion of the population
What has a higher scale pandemic or epidemic?. pandemic
Give an example of pandemic. HIV in Africa
Define infant mortality rate(IMR). total number of deaths in a year among infants under one year old for every 1,000 live births in a society
Are MDCs IMR low or high? LDCs?. MDC-low LDC-high
Define industrial revolution. series of improvements in industrial technology that transformed the process of manufacturing goods
Give an example of industrial revolution. machines were invented to help farmers
Define overpopulation. number of people in an area exceeds the capacity of the environment to support life at a decent standard of living
