Study of dental materials science that deals with the development, properties, manipulation, care evolution, and evaluation of materials used in the treatment and prevention of dental disease.
Dental materials are classified as? Preventative restorative therapeutic
preventive reduce or eliminate dental disease in the oral cavity
restorative materials used to reconstruct a tooth structure
therapeutic materials used to treat disease
what would be the perfect material? biocompatible bonds permanately esthetic repair or regenerate
biocompatible doesn't impede or adversely affect living tissue
bonds permanently connect with or joint to tooth structures
esthetic tooth colored, it looks natural
repair or regenerate missing teeth or tissues
why study dental materials ? safety maintenance delivery patient education
safety- handling materials, disposing, and patients safety
maintenance- clean, polish, know what type of instruments are being used
delivery- behavior of material how the material is mixed
patient education- options of the material , choices, and maintenance
1. restorative materials major effort is directed towards restorative functions
permanent materials that can last up to 20 years adjunct material
temporary fix few weeks to months
intermediate bases or thermal/chemical insulators placed between two structure and restoration insulates tooth from chemicals and temperatures
adjunct material louting agent or cement
2. Impression materials construction of appliances also impressions of diagnostic casts
3. casts, models, or dies replica of the mouth, teeth, or tooth area of the mouth
4. prostatic appliances artificial restore function and esthetics
5. polishing agents used to polish teeth, trails, and appliances
