SHMS 8th Grade Science Vocab 2

TermDefinition
Energy The ability to do work or to cause a change.
Kinetic Energy The energy an object has due to its motion.
Potential Energy Stored energy; the energy an object has due to its position, molecular arrangement, or chemical composition.
Inertia Is the resistance of an object to any change in the speed or the direction of its motion.
Heat The flow of energy from one object at a higher temperature to an object at a lower temperature.
Joule A unit used to measure energy and work.
Conductor A material that transfers energy easily.
Insulator A material that does not transfer energy easily.
Convection A process by which energy is transferred in gasses and liquids, occurring when a warmer, less dense area of gas or liquid is pushed up by a cooler, more dense area of the gas or liquid.
Radiation Energy that travels in straight lines across distances in the form of electromagnetic waves.
Conduction A process by which energy is transferred through direct contact (collision of atoms and molecules) of objects
Solids matter with a definite shape and volume; particles vibrate in place
Liquids matter with no definite shape and definite volume; particles slide past one another
Gases matter with no definite shape or volume; particles move freely
Phase Change conversion from one phase of matter to another due to energy gained or lost.
Plasma matter with no definite shape or volume, particles are charged
