Term | Definition |
---|---|
Energy | The ability to do work or to cause a change. |
Kinetic Energy | The energy an object has due to its motion. |
Potential Energy | Stored energy; the energy an object has due to its position, molecular arrangement, or chemical composition. |
Inertia | Is the resistance of an object to any change in the speed or the direction of its motion. |
Heat | The flow of energy from one object at a higher temperature to an object at a lower temperature. |
Joule | A unit used to measure energy and work. |
Conductor | A material that transfers energy easily. |
Insulator | A material that does not transfer energy easily. |
Convection | A process by which energy is transferred in gasses and liquids, occurring when a warmer, less dense area of gas or liquid is pushed up by a cooler, more dense area of the gas or liquid. |
Radiation | Energy that travels in straight lines across distances in the form of electromagnetic waves. |
Conduction | A process by which energy is transferred through direct contact (collision of atoms and molecules) of objects |
Solids | matter with a definite shape and volume; particles vibrate in place |
Liquids | matter with no definite shape and definite volume; particles slide past one another |
Gases | matter with no definite shape or volume; particles move freely |
Phase Change | conversion from one phase of matter to another due to energy gained or lost. |
Plasma | matter with no definite shape or volume, particles are charged |
