Why was the capture of Port Royal an important part of the Union's strategy to win the war? Port Royal became the base for the Union naval blockade
Why did the Union want to capture Richmond, Virgina? Richmond was the Confederate capital and the Confederate government would be captured along with the city.
How did the South plan to use the Hunley? The South wanted to use the submarine to help break the Union's blockade of Southern ports.
What term did the Union use when referring to the former slaves? Contrabands
What was the Anaconda Plan? The Anaconda Plan was to use the North's Navy to blockade the South's ports to interfere with their ability to get supplies and sell cotton to foreign countries.
Where were the first shots of the Civil War fired? Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, SC
How was the South affected by Sherman's use of the military strategy of Total War? Plantations and towns were burned, railroads were destroyed and the property of civilians was taken or destroyed.
Why was the South going to fight a defensive war as it's main strategy to win? The South would only have to fight on land they knew until the North tired of fighting because of the rising number of casualties.
Why did the Union choose to use the strategy of total war? They hoped it would destroy the South's spirit and end the war more quickly
How did the Civil War impact the lives of women? They had to deal with shortages, find ways to make substitutions for items they couldn't get and had to keep farms and businesses running.
How were African-Americans affected by the Civil War? Many slaves fled to freedom as Union troops came into the area and almost 200,000 fought for the Union during the second half of the war.
Why did the South believe cotton diplomacy would help them get money and supplies needed to fight the war? Britain and France needed the South's cotton for their industries
What is the war strategy used by Sherman in which the Union took the war to Confederate civilians in order to get the South to surrender? Total War
How did total war have a direct impact on South Carolina's citizens, especially in the city of Columbia in February of 1865? Columbia was burned, the capitol building was hit by cannon shells and damaged , homes were ransacked and people's farms and crops were destroyed.

How did SC react to Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation? As a Confederate state, they didn't recognize Lincoln's authority and didn't obey it.

What are border states? States that allowed slavery but didn't leave the Union.
