What does Annelids mean? little rings
What are some characteristics of Annelids? -tube shaped bodies that are divided into many segments -have setae -bilateral symmetry -a body cavity that holds organs 2 body openings (mouth & anus) -can live in freshwater, salt water, & moist soil
What are setae? bristle like structures on the outside of each body segment, they helt it move and "sense" the environment
What is the crop? a sac used for storage
What is the gizzard? a muscular structure which grinds the soil and the bits of organic matter
In which part of the earthworm does the organic matter is broken down & nutrients are absorbed by the blood? the intestines
Where does soil enter, in an earthworm? mouth
Where do the wastes leave the worm? through the anus
How does the digestion & excretion of an earthworm help the soil? the taking in of soil to get food helps provide spaces for air and water to flow through the soil and mix the soil, also the castings (wastes) fertilize the soil
Describe an earthworms circulatory system. -closed circulatory system -2 blood vessels -5 heart-like "aortic arches" that pump blood -smaller vessels go into each body segment
How does an earthworms respiratory system work if it has no gills or lungs? Oxygen and Carbon-dioxide exchange through their skin
Do earthworms have a brain? Yes, in their front segment
How do their nerves work? Nerves in each segment join to form the main nerve cord that connects to the brain
What do they respond to? light, temperature, & moisture
Earthworms are hermaphrodites. True or False? True
Can earthworms fertilize its own eggs? no
What 2 uses for leeches? 1. to keep blood from flowing after surgery 2. their saliva helps heal your wounds quicker
