Adolescent Psych

Exam 3

TermDefinition
Parents with high self-esteem lead active rewarding lives; permit dissent and discussion, but also uphold rule and decisions(adult prevails)
Parents with low self-esteem fewer rules; fewer limits which are poorly defined (vague). When rules are broken, punishment often nonexistent or harsh create confusion and powerlessness in kids. Weaker meaningful relationship with kids and adults.
Parental Monitoring includes knowing where one's children are, with whom they associate, and know what they are doing out of the house (and when in the house)
Extensive Parental Monitoring associated with less externalizing behavior, including conduct disorders, juvenile delinquency, and drug and alcohol use
Parental knowledge come primarily from teens telling their parents about their behavior
Relationships built on trust lent themselves to more adolescent disclosure, and therefore, less norm breaking and delinquency.
Parenting styles with warmer relationships with high school children and parental monitoring were associated with less problem behavior in teens and more disclosure from teens
Active methods directly asking for information
passive methods obtaining information provided by teens and others
balance with active-passive too active or suddenly active can appear intrusive and lead to resistance.
Why don't teens disclose? Avoid parental disapproval or negative consequences; protect another person; emotional reasons; gain autonomy form parents
Kids who lie show less self-restraint, have less cohesive families, have parents who set fewer limits, and have poorer adol-parent relationships
identity is a life-long process
identity improves with reflection
identity is deeply tied with our faith journey
identity balance we want a realistic view of ourselves without being overly concerned with ourselves, our needs, our purpose, etc.
with Christ in the process, this should lead to: humility,service,self-sacrifice,grace
Without Christ at center it can lead in many directions such as" cynicism, selfishness, anger, narcissism, etc,
New thinking brings deeper insight and ability to understand the self
differentiation occurs when we divide our experience and reality into "that's me" and "that's not me"
Who am I? Central question in adolescence
Erikson called this an Identity crisis
