Characterization Ways in which an author reveals the traits of characters to his audience
Conflict Struggle between two forces in a book
Flashback Interruption in a story to tell about events that happened earlier
Foreshadowing Hints about events that will occur further in the story
Irony Contradictory statement or situation
Verbal irony Characters says something but means the opposite
Complex sentence Has one independent clause and at least one subordinate clause
Compound-complex sentence Has two or ore independentclauses and at least one subordinate
Compound sentence Has two or more independent clauses but no subordinate clause
Independent clauses Expresses a complete thought and can stand by itself as a sentence.
Subordinate The use of a subordinate clause to show that idea is not as important as the idea in the independent, or main, clause
Hyperbole Exaggeration used to emphasize a point or to add excitment
Personification Giving human qualities or actions to nonhuman things
Idiom Expression that means something different from what says
Imagery Words or made up of mental images
Metaphor Comparison that uses no connecting words
Simile Using connecting Words such as "like,as, or them in the comparison"
Onomatopoeia Words that their sounds suggestits meaning
Allusion Reference made toa famous place, person or event
Connotation Thoughts feelings, and images assocated with a word
Denotation Dictonary definition of a word
Paradox Ideas are put against eachother, so that the statement appears to be untrue
Symbol Something concrete that stands for something abstract
