Simile A comparison using “like” or “as”
Metaphor A direct comparison not using “like” or “as”
Personification Compares animals or objects to people by giving them human qualities
Alliteration The use of 2 or more words that begin with the same consonant sound
Imagery Words or phrases that appeal to the reader’s senses
Poetry A type of literature arranged in lines and stanzas that usually has rhythm and rhyme
Free Verse a poem with no rhyme or rhythm
Hyperbole Over exaggeration
Line A single row of words in a poem
Stanza A group of lines; “paragraphs” of the poem
Rhythm The beat of the poem
Rhyme When 2 words end with the same sound
Couplet Two lines together that rhyme
Onomatopoeia Words that their sounds suggest their meaning
Repetition Uses the same word or phrase over and over again
End Rhyme Words that rhyme at the end of the lines in a poem
Internal Rhyme Two words the rhyme within the same line in a poem
Rhyme Scheme A pattern of the end rhymes in a poem
