QuestionAnswer
sanitation prevent the spread of contagious disease
safety fire and accident prevention, and first aid
how does staying healthy help control disease stronger immune system, regular checkups to detect disease early
smoking a lead cause of cardiovascular disease & lung cancer, secondhand smoke dangerous & offensive, lingering odor on breath, body or clothes can bother client, never smoke in massage area, and wash hands after smoking.inform new and potential clients if you smoke
alcohol and drugs interfere with ability to function as a professional, never work under influence, prescription and OTC meds can also impair functioning, wait at least twelve hours after drinking alcohol before working
person hygiene prevent odor, avoid chemical cover-ups,keep hair clean and neat, care for hands and nails, wear professional clothing made from a breathable fabric, clean shoes, modest makeup, facial hair shaved or trimmed, no jewelry
5 pathogenic organisms viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa and metazoa
viruses invade cells and insert own genetic cole into host cells genetic code, use the host cells nutrients to produce more virus particles, burst cells membranes to escape and infect new cells, hard to treat, very small
bacteria primitive cells without nuclei, cause disease in 3 ways, spores, bigger cell than virus
3 ways bacteria cause disease by secreting toxic substances that damage human tissue,by becoming parasites,by forming colonies that disrupt normal body function
spores resistant form of bacteria, has shield, need high temperature or chemical to kill.
fungi simple organisms, many are parasites, similar to plants, but without chlorophyll, most pathogenic fungi live on skin or mucous membranes, many mycotic (fungal) infections resistant to treatment.i.e athletes foot
protozoa unicellular organisms larger than bacteria, cause skin disease, spread thru direct contact, skin integrity helps prevent infection
metazoa pathogenic animals, larger multicellular organisms, cause skin disease, spread thru direct contact, skin integrity helps prevent infection
ways of disease transmission environmental contact, opportunistic invasion, person-to-person contact.
environmental contact pathogens in food, soil, water and on surfaces, door knobs, cow poop contaminate soil
opportunistic invasion pathogenic organisms already on site respond to change in condition to cause disease, low immune system
person-to-person contact pathogens carried through air or present in bodily fluids, kissing , sex, coughing
aseptic technique kill pathogens before transmission, sterilization, disinfection, isolation
sterilization aseptic technique, destroys all organisms by means of heat
disinfection aseptic technigue, destroys most or all pathogens (but not necessarily all microbes) on inanimate objects
isolation aseptic technique, separates potentially infectious people or material from uninfected individuals, quarentine
Most effective way to prevent spread of disease handwashing, soap hands, rinse hands, clean hands, dry
sanitation requirements observe state and local news, include all aspects of massage environment, from personal hygiene to safety of premises
standard precautions not necessary under normal massage circumstances, treat client with respect, dignity, and kindness,it is the pathogen that is undesirable, not the person, assume everyone carries disease
standard precautions apply to blood, all body fluids, secretions, and excretions, except sweat, regardless of whether they contain visible blood, nonintact skin, mucous membranes
standard precautions hand washing wash hands after contact with blood, body fluids, secretions, excretions, and contaminated items, after removing gloves, between clients, whenever necessary to avoid spreading microorganisms
standard precautions gloves touch blood, body fluids, secretions, excretions, contaminated items, mucous membranes/nonintact skin, protect client immune-suppressed=chemo pt,chg gloves btw tasks/procedures same client, remove gloves promptly after before touching uncontaminated items
standard precautions other protective apparel during activities likely splash or spray blood, body fluids, secretions,or excretions, wear a mask and eye protection,or a face shield,to protect mucous membranes, wear gown to protect skin and clothing
standard precaution cleanup use standard precautions to clean up blood and body substances, possible types of body substance spills, menstrual blood, urine or feces, sneezing, ejaculate, vomit, coughing, use gloves put in plastic bag and label contaminated soil
cleanup spills wear gloves,10% bleach solution surround spill, mop slowly to avoid splash, soak mop head/cloth in bleach solution after, roll all linens, place in double plastic bag, mark contaminated, wash table, allow to air dry,use bleach solution on dishes before washing
