Pub Holistic Health

Lecture 1

QuestionAnswer
Health state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not nearly the absence of disease or infirmity (from the WHO)
Health Natural state of the body, proper quantity of energy moving through a system in a balanced, harmonious way. A state of vitality, stability and well being in the mind-body complex. TCM definition=traditional chinese medicine
Holistic Health an approach to life, not focusing on illness or specific parts of the body, ancient approach to health=whole person and how they interact with their environment.connection of the mind, body, spirit.responsibility for their own level of well-being
homeostasis the body in perfect states of balance-a steady state
homeodynamic model the ever changing environment of the body where there is an ongoing movement toward balance and ongoing interaction between all systems
disease an imbalance of any or all of the above. it is when the system ceases to be in a state of balance that disease begins to manifest. reflected first in minor signs and symptoms.
Sources of Disease disrupt balance of homeodynamic system.TCM.Internal and external
internal source of disease constitution, emotions, musculoskeletal misalignment, sexual sources of disease
external sources of disease 6 pathogens,pollution,microorganisms, exercise/rest,medications,trauma,boredom/purposelessness,Iatrogenic,nutrition,
constitution our genetic make-up,physical, emotional, mental inheritance.mom health during pregnancy,TMC conception fusion of pre-heavan essence, the jing from the mother and father.
Jing pre-heavan essence (sperm and egg) from mother and father, jing is then stored in child's kidney as life force
Jing responsible for growth and development, reproduction, determining the length of life span, health of the individual
Emotions Seven= anger, worry, joy or overexcitement, fear, shock, pensiveness, sadness.because causitive factor of disease, source or result of disease
anger affects the liver and causes Qi to ascend
worry affects lung, spleen, and heart;stagnates and knots the qi
joy or overexcitement affects the heart and slows and relaxes the qi
fear affects the kidney and descends the qi, pee pants
shock affects the kidney and heart, scatters the qi
pensivenss thinking too much worry affects the spleen and knots the qi
sadness affects the lungs and weakens the qi
musculoskeletal alignment poor posture, skeletal misalignment,or muscular tension can block the free flow of qi and result in disease
sexual sources of disease kidney essence manifests as sperm in men/ova in women.excess sex will impair kidney essence manifesting poor health.lack of sex cause disease, atrophy of structures.sex should be adjusted according to constitution, age, physical condition, and seasons
six pathogens external source cold, heat, wind, dryness, dampness, summer heat,
cold winter, slows down or stagnates qi and causes contraction and pain
heat summer, dries up body fluids and disturbs the mind. produces symptoms like thirst, fever, scanty urine, and constipation
wind spring, causes a rapid onset of symptoms which can move from place to place in the body
dryness fall, will consume fluids
dampness summer, characterized as heavy and sticky, results in fluid accumulation and discharge
summer heat summer, usually occurs in the summer and will bring about the symptoms of heat
pollution air,water,noise,electromagnetic
exercise/rest improper quality, poor techniqu/equipment,and poor breathing, improper quantity, over training or under training.insufficient rest, overwork: can lead to disease
medications cause toxicity in the body which must be processed and eliminated by the liver and kidney. medications also have many adverse reactions(side effects)
air pollution car fumes, cleaning materials, toxic substances
water pollution toxic chemicals, acid rain
noise pollution loud work environment, CD players
electromagnetic pollution cell phones high, voltage wires
trauma emotional or physical trauma can be a source of disease, will usually cause stagnation withing the energy system. western medicine is very effective in acute trauma
boredom and purposelessness considered to be the opposite of overwork and can cause disease. we all need a reason to get up in the morning
iatrogenic disease caused by tx or dx procedures. includes the fears instilled in pt by remarks or questions of examining physicians=miss dx
nutrition poor quality of food, poor eating habits, seven basic nutrients, foods to avoid or minimize, nights shades, shell fish, hydrogenated or refined oils, deli food
highly recommended foods fresh organic fruits and vegs, whole grains, organic meats and eggs, fresh farm grown fish(salmon),filtered spring or distilled water, unrefined vegetable oil
poor quality of food additives, contaminated food, irradiated, processed food
poor eating habits eating too little or too much, eathing on the run, eating late at night, eating constantly
seven basic nutrients air, water, protein, lipids, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals
foods to avoid or minimize refined sugars, dairy products, refined flour and grains, all chemical additives, toxic beverages, salt
refined sugars to avoid depletes spleen energy
dairy products to avoid mucus forming
refined flour and grains to avoid they are stripped from most important nutrients
toxic beverages caffeine,alcohol,soda
night shades contain alkaloids may aggravate degenerative joint disease in some sensitive people. Potato, tomato, sweet and hot peppers, eggplant, pimentos, paprika, cayenne and tabasco. however sweet potato yams. black and white pepper, avocados have no affect on arthritis
shellfish to avoid such as muscles, clams, oyster, scallops are filter feeders may pose shellfish poisoning thru accumulating toxins produced by microscopic algae
hydrogenated or refined oils to avoid artificially saturated
deli food to avoid commerciall prepared meats my contain nitrate
Reduction perspective adopted by western science-reducing something to smallest components to understand whole, scientific approach=specialization of medicine and disregard for complex, dynamic interrelationship of bio-systems of living body as a whole
Holism whole perspective, broad perspective views man as complex, dynamic being consisting of many intergrated systems, considers physical, emitional, intellectual and metaphysical aspects of life
Holistic Health principles human being living energy system, real health, treats whold person not just symptoms and disease, all approaches valued and intergrated, recognize power of body to heal mind (viseversa),person has responsibility for own health and active in own healing
Real health involves whole person, mind and body intergrated and inseperable, not just absence of disease, but a positive state of being.achieved c tx of causes rather than symptoms using natural and preventative approach
human being living energy system any disturbances in the mind, body or spirit reflects a disturbance in the whole system
Approach valued and intergrated natural, low risk methods which mobilize the individuals healing resources thak precedence over drugs, surgery and other hazardous therapies
