Question | Answer |
---|---|
What is a stimulus? | Anything in our surroundings that causes us to take action |
If sight is the sense what is the sense organ? | The eyes |
If hearing is the sense what is the sense organ? | The ears |
If smell is the sense what is the sense organ? | The nose |
If touch is the sense what is the sense organ? | The skin |
If taste is the sense what is the sense organ? | The tongue |
What is the central nervous system? | It consists of the brain and the spinal cord. |
What is the brain? | A complex structure containing many millions of nerve cells |
What is the spinal cord? | Contains many nerves witch take messages to and from the the brain |
What is a neuron? | A nerve cell |
What do sensory neurons do? | Carry messages to the brain or central nervous system. They make us aware of a stimulus |
What motor neurons do? | Carries messages away from the brain or central nervous system to a muscle. They cause us to carry out a response |
What is the iris? | The coloured part at the front of the eye. Its function is to expand or contract to the amount of light entering the eye |
What is the pupil? | The black circle in the middle of the iris. Its function is to allow light enter the eye |
In bright light the pupil shrinks, why is this? | To prevent to much light entering the eye |
In dim light the pupil enlarges, why is this? | To allow more light to enter the eye |
What is the lens? | It changes shape depending on weather we are looking at a near or far object |
why do some people need glasses/contacts? | If their lens does not take up the correct shape and things appear blurred |
What is the retina? | A light sensitive layer at the back of the eye. The function of it is to absorb light and allow us to see |
What does the optic nerve do? | Carries messages from the eye to the brain |
What is the cornea? | The transparent section of the covering of the eye. Its function is to allow light to pass into the eye |
What is the ciliary muscle? | It surrounds the lens and contracts and relaxes shapes to cause the lens to change shape |
