Science(The sensory system)

What is a stimulus? Anything in our surroundings that causes us to take action
If sight is the sense what is the sense organ? The eyes
If hearing is the sense what is the sense organ? The ears
If smell is the sense what is the sense organ? The nose
If touch is the sense what is the sense organ? The skin
If taste is the sense what is the sense organ? The tongue
What is the central nervous system? It consists of the brain and the spinal cord.
What is the brain? A complex structure containing many millions of nerve cells
What is the spinal cord? Contains many nerves witch take messages to and from the the brain
What is a neuron? A nerve cell
What do sensory neurons do? Carry messages to the brain or central nervous system. They make us aware of a stimulus
What motor neurons do? Carries messages away from the brain or central nervous system to a muscle.They cause us to carry out a response
What is the iris? The coloured part at the front of the eye. Its function is to expand or contract to the amount of light entering the eye
What is the pupil? The black circle in the middle of the iris. Its function is to allow light enter the eye
In bright light the pupil shrinks, why is this? To prevent to much light entering the eye
In dim light the pupil enlarges,why is this? To allow more light to enter the eye
What is the lens? It changes shape depending on weather we are looking at a near or far object
why do some people need glasses/contacts? If their lens does not take up the correct shape and things appear blurred
What is the retina? A light sensitive layer at the back of the eye. The function of it is to absorb light and allow us to see
What does the optic nerve do? Carries messages from the eye to the brain
What is the cornea? The transparent section of the covering of the eye. Its function is to allow light to pass into the eye
What is the ciliary muscle? It surrounds the lens and contracts and relaxes shapes to cause the lens to change shape
