Is picky eating a risk factor for developing eating disorders? No, picky eating is not a risk factor for developing eating disorders.
What sort of quality of life to children with obesity have? 5 times likelier to have an impaired quality of life in obese children
What is "false hope syndrome"? The hope of changing appearance. When you begin dieting, you will lose weight immediately
What is the key motivational factor for dieting/body image maintenance? "Drive for thinness" - brings about weight preoccupation
In what age range can eating habits and attitudes form? As early as 7-10 years old
What sort of treatment is offered for obese children? Focused on decreasing inactivity and increasing proper nutritional and exercise habits. Restricting diet is actually NOT recommended.
What is the obesity rate in young boys? Which sex has more obese children? Since the 1980's it has tripled in boys age 7-13. Girls are more obese, though. It doubled for girls.
Is there a correlation between obesity in infancy and in childhood? What about childhood onset onto adolescence? No correlation for babies to childhood. Childhood-onset obesity does usually lead to obesity in teens and adulthood.
What is the similarity between obese and children with ED? Similarities between obese and ED: Social implications- suffer teasing and bullying at school. Also parents have bad eating attitudes in both cases.
What are the risks associated with childhood obesity? Risks for obese children: heart and cholesterol problems, fatal in 10% of cases, later emergence of eating disorders
Is SES a factor in obese children? Yes, SES is a factor. Junk food at low costs, limited physical activity because it's unsafe to go outside and play
What are the causes for childhood obesity? Heritability, lifestyle choices imposed by parents. Psych factors in the home: lack of support, mistreatment by parents, lack of communication
