Phases of Matter
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What is a solid? | The state of matter in which materials have a definite shape and a definite volume. |
What is a liquid? | The state of matter in which a material has a definite volume but no definite shape. |
What is a gas? | The state of matter in which a material has neither a definite shape nor a definite volume. |
What is kinetic energy? | The energy an object has due to its motion. |
What is pressure? | The result of a force distributed over an area. |
What is absolute zero? | A temperature of 0 Kelvin. |
What is Charles's Law? | Charles's Law states that the volume of a gas is directly proportional to its temperature in Kelvin if the pressure and number of particles are constant. |
What is Boyle's Law? | Boyle's Law states that the volume of a gas is inversely proportional to its pressure if the temperature and number of particles are constant. |
What is a phase change? | The reversible physical change that occurs when a substance changes from one state of matter to another. |
What is an endothermic change? | A change in which the system absorbs energy from its surroundings. |
What is heat of fusion? | The amount of energy absorbed in an endothermic change. |
What is an exothermic change? | A change in which the system releases energy to its surroundings. |
What is vaporization? | The phase change in which a liquid changes to a gas. |
What is heat of vaporization? | The amount of energy absorbed during vaporization. |
What is evaporation? | The process that changes a substance from a liquid to a gas at temperatures below the substance's boiling point. |
What is vapor pressure? | The pressure caused by the collisions of a vapor and the walls of a container. |
What is condensation? | The phase change in which a substance changes from a gas to a liquid. |
What is sublimation? | The phase change in whicha substance changes from a solid to a gas or vapor without changing to a liquid first. |
What is deposition? | The phase change in which a gas or vapor changes directly to a solid. |
