What is a Kinship? Who makes the decisions? A Kinship is a family related by blood, marriage, or adoption.
How does a Kinship turn into a Clan? By joining together with other kinships that have a common ancestor.
What is labor specialization? When a person does a special job.
How did Africans grow? Who controlled trade? Africans grew through trade. Rulers, called kings, controlled trade.
What is oral history? Oral history is when people pass down history through telling stories.
What are the three vegetation zones of West Africa? The Sahara, savanna, and rain forest.
What are some of the goods they traded? They traded food, slaves, gold, salt, and dried fruit.
How did the kings of Ghana get rich? They taxed trade.
Why did the people of Ghana keep the gold a secret? So it would be more valuable.
How did the empire of Ghana decline? The Almoravids attack from jealousy of their wealth.
What city was the center of trade and wealth in Mali? Timbuktu
Who went on a pilgrimage to Mecca? Mansa Musa
Why were people so impressed with Mansa Musa? He brought a lot of gold and many slaves.
Which nomads seized much of the Mali empire? The Berbers.
Who came to power after the Berbers? Sunni Ali
Why did the Kongo move into an area around the Congo River? Fertile soil, iron, copper ore, good fishing, and transportation,
Who did the Kongo set up a trading relationship with? Portugal
Why did the Kingdom of Kongo start trading slaves? So they could get more goods and become more powerful.
Why does Kongo cut off trade with Portugal? Their population was declining.
How many people were transported against their will to America? 11 million.
