What does GAD stand for? Generalized anxiety disorder
What type of anxiety disorder is this describing? "excessive fear of a specific stimulus" specific phobia
What type of anxiety disorder is this describing? "Intrusive thoughts - thoughts are usually distressing" OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder)
What type of anxiety disorder is this describing? "repeated panic attacks and are anxious about having panic attacks" Panic disorder
What type of anxiety disorder is this describing? "Excessive worry" GAD
What are the four defining features of paruresis? - disruption of micturition, - in defined public or social settings, - fear others will perceive self as unusual or inadequate, - avoidance
'Public' essentially means where others can observe or have some ______ of you urinating (h__________,s__________,s____________ or k____________) notion, hearing, seeing, smelling, knowing
Comorbidity is common with paruresis. What does this mean? That people who have paruresis also often experience other anxiety disorders
Is family history common in paruresis? Yes, 16% of people have a family history of it.
It is common for people with paruresis to have a secondary disorder. What doe this mean? This means that another disorder will arise as a consequence of paruresis. For example bladder infections or kidney problems because they won't want to give sample at doctors so is left untreated and gets worse.
Is paruresis more common in males or females? Males
What is the mean onset age for paruresis? 13 years
Is paruresis recurrent and stable for years? Yes
There are four possible reasons that paruresis is more common in males than females. Read and write them out... .... :)
is paruresis a specific phobia anxiety disorder? No
Is paruresis a social phobia? Some people are put into this category and some aren't. The psychological arousal that occurs in social phobia is not always present in paruresis
What are two other types of disorders of micturition? Enuresis (bed wetting) and psychogenic urinary retention (inability to urinate at all)
What is an example of secondary gains? Woman has sex with husband which gives relief of psychogen urinary retention disorder and so husband is home more which is the secondary gain. And the primary gain is the relief
What does primary gain mean? The drives and tension are addressed
Is psychogenic urinary retention an acute or long-term disorder? And why? Acute because you have to do something to fix it fast because it is too uncomfortable and can cause damage to bladder and organs
There are three ideas for how to explain paruresis. What are they? And then read and write them out 1. Learning the wrong behavior 2. Invasion of personal space 2. Shyness or social phobia
What did they find when they looked at brain activity and paruresis? That their was brain activity in the amygdala which means that certain brain structures are associated to the aetiology of anxiety disorders.
