What is a pure substance? Matter that always has exactly the same composition.
What is an element? A substance that cannot be broken down into smaller and smaller pieces.
What is an atom? The smallest particle in an element.
What is a compound? A substance that can be broken down into those simpler substances.
What is a heterogeneous mixture? The parts of the mixture that are noticeable.
What is a homogeneous mixture? Substances are so evenly distributed that it is difficult to distinguish one substance in a mixture from another.
What is a solution? When substances dissolve and form a homogeneous mixture
What is a suspension? A heterogeneous mixture that separates into layers over time.
What is a colloid? contains some particles that are intermediate in size between the small particles in a solution and the larger particles in a suspension.
