Question | Answer |
---|---|
Alzheimer's Disease | Progressive, degenerative disease of the brain consisting of dementia, memory loss, impairement to speech, gait and other cognitive functions. |
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis | ALS: Lou Gehrig's Disease: Degeneration fo motor neurons at teh spinal cord causing muscular weakness and atrophy, cause unknown. |
Bell's Palsy | Inflammation of teh facial nerve resulting in temporary paralysis of one side of the face; recovery usually occurs within weeks or months. |
Brain Tumor | Crainial tumor either benign or malignant |
Cerebral Palsy | CP: Brain damage causing motor and posture dysfunctions; result of defect, trauma, or oxygen deprivation at birth |
Cerebrovascular Accident | CVA: Stroke: death of brain tissue resulting from a lack of blood and oxygen in the brain; can be caused by an arterial clot (embolus) that blocks the flow of blood to the brain or a hemorrhage in the brain |
Concussion | injury to the brain caused by a blow or impact; loss of consciousness, dizziness, vomiting, and shock can result |
Epilepsy | Neurological disorder caused by interference in the brain's electrical impulses resulting in episodic seizures; convulsions, muscle spasms, and loss of consciousness can occur |
Guillain-Barre Syndrome | Condition in which teh myelin sheaths covering peripheral nerves are destroyed, resulting in loss of sensation and muscle control beginning at the legs and continuing up teh body; paralysis can occur |
Headache | moderate or intense pain in teh head; may be episodic or chronic |
Migraine | unilateral head pain, sometimes behind the eye |
Tension | squeezing or pressing pain on both sides of the head and sometimes the facial area |
Cluster | excruciating pain behind the eyes or in the temples, may occur over 2-3 months, typically at night. |
Posttraumatic | similar to migraine or tension headaches, due to a head or neck injury |
Meningitis | Bacterial or Viral infection of the meninges that surround the brain and spinal cord; can be fatal if untreated. |
Multiple Sclerosis | MS: Chronic autoimmune disease affecting the brain and spinal cord; the body attacks and destroys the myelin sheaths surrounding brain and spinal cord nerves |
Neuralgia | Intense pain caused by irritation or injury to a nerve |
Parkinson's disease | Chronic disorder of the nervous system resulting in tremors, muscular weakness, rigidity, and a shuffling gait. |
Sciatica | Pain along teh large sciatic nerve that runs from the lower back to the back of each leg; often caused by pressure on a nerve from a herniated (slipped) disk |
Shingles | Painful rash erupting along a sensory nerve path. |
Spinal Cord Injury | SCI: damage to teh spinal cord due to trauma; can result in paralysis of certain areas of the body; paraplegia refers to paralysis from waist down. Quadriplegia refers to paralysis from the shoulders down. |
Transient Ischemic Attack | TIA: Temporary interference with blood and oxygen supply to the brain: also called ministroke; may lead to stroke. |
