Supplementary Classifications- E codes

These codes classify environmental events, circumstances, and other condtion as the cause of injuries and other adverse effects. E codes. External causes of injury and poisoning (E000-E999)
E codes connot be assigned as the principal diagnosis. They are supplementary to a code from the main chapters that identifies the nature of what? The nature of the illness or injury.
Where are E codes indexed from? The Alphabetic Index to External Causes of Injury and Poisoning.(its a separate index that follows the table of drugs and chemical in Volume 2)
E codes are indexed by main terms describing what? The accident. (ex dog bite, earthquake)
RULE: E800-E999 may be used with any code in the range of 001-V91 that indicates what? Injury, poisoning, or adverse effect due to an external cause.
An activity E code E001-E30 may be used with a code in the range of 001-V91 that indicate what? Injury resulting from an activity.
For a poisoning or injury what kind of E code would you use for subsequent treatment-related f/u visits? Late effects (use only if late effect is documented)
