vertical axis A line that runs up and down along the side of a graph, on which the responding variable (or dependent variable) is labeled
origin The point where the x-axis and y-axis cross on a graph
coordinate A pair of numbers used to determine the position of a point on a graph
independent variable The variable that is changed on purpose
dependent variable The variable that changes in response to another variable
hypothesis A possible explanation for a set of observations; must be testable
controlled experiment An experiment in which only one variable is manipulated at a time
operational definition A statement that describes how to measure a particular variable or how to define a particular term
patent A legal document issued by a government that gives an inventor exclusive rights to make, use, or sell an invention for a limited time
technology How people modify the world around them to meet their needs or to solve practical problems
obsolete No longer in use
prototype A working model used to test a design
engineer A person who is trained to use both technological and scientific knowledge to solve practical problems
