mass A measure of the amount of matter an object contains
weight A measure of the force of gravity acting on an object
volume The amount of space an object takes up
meniscus The curved upper surface of a liquid in a column of liquid
density A measure of how much mass is contained in a given volume
estimate An approximation of a number based on reasonable assumptions
accuracy How close a measurement is to the true or accepted value
precision How close a group of measurements are to each other
mean The numerical average of the numbers in a list
median The middle number in a list of numbers
mode The number that appears most often in a list of numbers
graph A picture of information from a data table; shows the relationship between variables
horizontal axis A line that runs left to right along the bottom of a graph, on which the manipulated variable (or independent variable) is labeled
vertical axis A line that runs up and down along the side of a graph, on which the responding variable (or dependent variable) is labeled
origin The point where the x-axis and y-axis cross on a graph
coordinate A pair of numbers used to determine the position of a point on a graph
independent variable The variable that is changed on purpose
dependent variable The variable that changes in response to another variable
hypothesis A possible explanation for a set of observations; must be testable
controlled experiment An experiment in which only one variable is manipulated at a time
operational definition A statement that describes how to measure a particular variable or how to define a particular term
patent A legal document issued by a government that gives an inventor exclusive rights to make, use, or sell an invention for a limited time
technology How people modify the world around them to meet their needs or to solve practical problems
obsolete No longer in use
prototype A working model used to test a design
engineer A person who is trained to use both technological and scientific knowledge to solve practical problems
