America immediately after the Revolutionary War

What was the Northwest Ordinance? a law passed in 1787 that created a single Northwest territory out of the Ohio River Valley lands.
What happened to the veterans of the American Revolution? They returned home to find they had to pay high taxes to help pay for the American Revolution.
What did some veterans have to do because of the high taxes? They had to lose their land, and some even ended up in debtor's prison.
What was Shay's Rebellion? An uprising, led by an angry farmer, to revolt against the government because of the high taxes.
What did Shay's Rebellion prove? That a strong national government with the powers to raise an army were needed.
Why did the country not have an army after the war? The soldiers who had fought went home to their lands and Congress did not have the power to make more soldiers come and serve
What happened to Loyalists after the Revolution? Around 100,000 left America because they faced hard treatment from Patriots
What was the first plan of government of the United States? the Articles of Confederation
Who had the most power under the Articles of Confederation, the states or the national government? The states
Did Britain leave the Great Lakes region after the war, like they promised in the Treaty of Paris 1783? No. They still had British troops there.
What problems did Spain give America? They closed the lower Mississippi River to American ships in 1784 because they wanted to stop American expansion to the west.
When were the Articles of Confederation finally approved by Congress? 1781
Who was the first president under the Articles of Confederation? John Hanson
What did soldiers do while Hanson was in office? Threatened to overthrow the new government and make Washington a king.
What did Hanson do while in office as President under the Articles of Confederation? He established the Great Seal of the United States; he also established the Treasury Dept., the Secretary of War, and the Foreign Affairs Dept.
How long could a president serve under the Articles of Confederation? one year term for any 3 year period
How many presidents were there under the Articles of Confederation? 7 in all
Who was the first President under the Constitution? George Washington
What happened to slavery following the creation of the United States of America? In the North, it gradually declined, while in the South, it greatly increased.
What was the policy on slavery in the Northwest Territory? it was illegal to own slaves in the Northwest Territory.
What happened to Native Americans in the new United States? They were considered a conquered nation and were not given citizenship to all until 1924.
What problems did the Articles of Confederation have? It was very weak. The states had most of the power, and they need 9 / 13 states to agree to approve new laws.
What new plan of government will replace the Articles of Confederation in 1787? the Constitution of the United States of America
