Habitat The place where an organism lives and that provides "the things" the organism needs
Detritus Loose matter resulting from the wearing away or disintegration of a tissue or substance
Detritivores An organism that uses organic waste as a food source, as certain insects.
Primary Succession The changes that occur in an area where no ecosystem has existed
Secondary Succession The changes that occur after a disturbance in an ecosystem
Succession The replacement of one type of community by another at a single location over a period of time
Pioneer Species A species that colonizes an inhabited area and that starts an ecological cycle in which many other species become established.
Niche An organism's particular role in an ecosystem or hot it makes its living
Indigenous Produced, growing, living or occurring naturally in a particular region or environment
Endemic A species that is native to a particular place and that is found only there
Autotroph An organism that makes its own food
Heterotroph An organism that cannot make its own food
Crypsis Avoidance of observation that allows an otherwise visible organism or object to remain hard to see from the surrounding environment through deception. EX: Camouflage
