Chem/ Phys Changes

Chemistry and physical changes.

QuestionAnswer
Physical Changes A change that occurs without changing the identity of the substance.
Chemical Changes A change that occurs by changing the identity of the substance.
Mixture When 2 or more substances combine physically.
Compound When 2 or more substances are combined chemically and can't be separated by physical means.
Homogeneous mixture Parts are mixed evenly throughout.(same)
Heterogeneous mixture Parts are uneven throughout.(different)
Solution Type of mixture where the solute is dissolved/mixed evenly in the solvent.
Solute The part of the solution that dissolves.
Solvent The part of the solution that the solute dissolves in.
Atom Smallest unit of matter.
Element One of the 100 or more units that make up all matter, and found on the Periodic Table.
Mass How much matter is in something.
Reactant The elements and compounds you start with in a reaction/equation.
Product The elements and compounds that you end with in a reaction/equation.
Reactivity The ability to react with another element or compound.
Coefficient The number in front of the molecule.
Subscript The number to the bottom right of an element that tells how many atoms there are of that element.
Alkali Metals Group 1 a highly reactive group of metals that makes compounds with Group 7 (17).
Halogens Group 7 (17) a highly reactive group of non-metals that makes compounds with Group 1.
Noble Gases Group 8 (18) a group of non-reactive, non-metals that are all gases at room temperature.
