Term | Definition |
periodic table | An arrangement of all of the elements by atomic number (protons), in which elements of similar properties are grouped in columns. |
reactive | An atom's ability to combine with other atoms with their valence electrons. |
group / family | The 18 vertical (up & down) columns on the periodic table. These elements have similar properties. |
periods | The 7 horizontal (across) rows of elements on the periodic table. |
metal | An element to the left of the stair step on the periodic table that can be classified based on physical properties (shiny, malleable, ductile). These elements also easily give up valence electrons in a chemical reaction. |
nonmetal | An element to the right of the zig-zag on the periodic table that can be classified based on physical properties (dull, brittle, non-ductile). These elements are also poor conductors of heat & electricity. |
metalloid | The elements that sit on or just below the zig-zag line. They have physical properties of both metals and nonmetals. |
noble gases | Elements in group 18 that are non-reactive. They have a full valence shell (8 electrons or 2 for He) |
