scale | a series of numbers starting at zero and placed at fixed distances on a graph to help label the graph |
interval | the difference between one number and the next on the scale of a graph |
stem-and -leaf plot | a table that shows groups of data arranged by place value. The data is organized from least to greatest |
histogram | a bar graph that shows the number of times data occurs within intervals |
Venn Diagram | a diagram that shows relationships among sets of things |
data | information collected about people or things, often to draw conclusions about them |
survey | method of gathering information about a group |
population | the entire group of objects or individuals considered for a survey |
sample | a part of a population |
random sample | a sample in which each subject in the population has an equal chance of being chosen |
cumulative frequency | a running total of the data |
outlier | a value separated from the rest of the data |
pictograph | a graph that displays countable data with symbols or pictures |
bar graph | a graph that uses horizontal or vertical bars to display countable data |
line graph | a graph that uses a line to show how data changes over time |
circle graph | a closed figure that shows how parts of the data are related to the whole and to each other |
trend | the patter over time, in all or part of a graph , where the data increases, decreases, or stays the same |
mode | the number that appears the most often in a set of numbers |
mean | average/ found by adding the numbers and dividing the sum by the number of addends |
range | the difference between the greatest and the least number in a set |
median | the middle number when the numbers are arranged in order from least to greatest |
variable | a letter or symbol that stands for one or more numbers; not capital letters |
equation | an algebraic or number sentence that two quantities are equal |
expression | a mathematical phrase or the part of a number sentence that combines numbers,operation signs, and sometimes variables, but NOT AN EQUAL SIGN. |
algebra | a branch of math in which symbols represent numbers |
decimal | a number with one or more digits to the right of the decimal point; representing part of a whole |
periods | each group of three digits in a family;the family's last name |
standard form | the regular way we write numbers |
word form | when a number is written in ALL WORDS |
short word form | when ONLY the PERIODS are written in words |
expanded form | when a number is written as the sum of the value of the digits |

divisor | number dividing by: the number outside the house |
