Question | Answer |
Heat | Thermal energy. This is actually the kinetic motion of the particles within a substance. |
Temperature | The measure of how much heat is in a substance. |
Kelvin Scale | Temperature scale that measures the absolute temperature of a substance. |
Sublimation | The change of state from a solid directly to a gas (like dry ice). |
Deposition | The change of state from a gas directly to a solid (like frost on a cold morning). |
Condensation | The change of state from a gas to a liquid. |
Vaporization | The change of state from a liquid to a gas. |
Melting | The change of state from a solid to a liquid |
Freezing | The change of state from a liquid to a solid. |
Plasma | The state of matter where molecules have the most kinetic energy. Most matter in the universe is in this state. |
Solid | The state of matter where molecules have the least amount of kinetic energy. Molecules are packed closely together. The substance has definite shape and volume. |
Gas | The state of matter that does not have definite shape or volume. Molecules need more space and bounce off of each other. |
Liquid | The state of matter that has definite volume, but not definite shape. Molecules slide past each other. |
Phase Change | A physical change from one state of matter to another. |
Absolute Zero | The coldest possible temperature (-273C). Particles have no kinetic energy at this temperature. |
