rational number | any number that can be written as a ratio of two integers |
relatively prime | two numbers are relatively prime if their greatest common factor is 1. |
LCD | the least common multiple of two or more denominators |
domain | the set of all possible input values of a function |
vertical line test | if a vertical line intersects the graph of a relation at exactly one point, then the relation is a function. |
range | the set of all possible values of a function |
function | an input output relation where each input has exactly one output |
base | when a number is raised to a power, the number that is used as a factor is the base |
exponent | the number that indicates how many times the base is used as a factor |
exponential form | a number is written as a base with an exponent |
power | a number produced by raising a base to an exponent |
scientific notation | a method of writing very large or small numbers using powers of ten |
perfect square | a square of a whole number |
square root | one of two equal factors of a number |
principal square root | the nonnegative square root of a number |
density property | between any two real numbers, there is always another real number |
irrational number | a number that cannot be expressed as a ratio of two integers |
real number | a rational or irrational number |
hypotenuse | in a right triangle, the side opposite the right angle |
leg | in a right triangle, the sides that include the right angle |
Pythagorean Theorem | in a right triangle, the hypotenuse squared is equal to the sum of th legs squared...a squared plus b squared equals c squared |
percent change | the amount stated as a percent that a number increases or decreases |
percent decrease | a percent change indicating a decrease in quantity |
percent increase | a percent change indicating an increase in quantity |
commission | the fee paid to a person making a sale |
commission rate | the fee paid to a person expressed as a percent of the selling price |
interest | the amount of money charged for borrowing or savin money |
principal | the initial amount of money borrowed or saved |
rate of interest | the percent charged or earned on an amount of money |
simple interest | I=prt, Interest=principal times rate times time |
area | the number of square units needed to cover a surface |
perimeter | the distance around a polygon |
circle | the set of all points in a plane that are the same distance from the center |
circumference | the distance around a circle |
diameter | the line that passes through the center of the circle and has endpoints on the circle |
radius | the line from the center of the circle to a point on the circle |
base | the shape used to classify a figure |
cone | a 3d shape that has one vertex and one circular base |
cylinder | a 3d shape that has two parallel congruent circular bases |
edge | where two faces meet |
face | a flat surface of a 3d figure |
prism | two congruent polygon shaped bases with parallelograms on the sides |
pyramid | one base that is a polygon and remaining faces are triangles |
vertex | where a figure comes to a point |
