Question | Answer |
Density | The ratio of mass to volume which indicates the spacing of the particles in the substance |
SI - International system of measurement | The measurement system accepted worldwide. Also known as the metric system. |
Volume | The amount of space occupied by an object |
Accuracy | How close a measurement is to the true/accepted value |
Percent Error | A value calculated by subtracting the experimental value from the accepted value, dividing the difference by the accepted value, and then multiplying by 100 |
Precision | How closely a set of repeated measurements are to each other |
Scientific Notation | numbers written in the form Mx10^n where the factor M is a number greater than or equal to 1 but less than 10 and n is a whole number |
Matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
state of matter | solid, liquid, or gas |
solid | state of matter where the particles have low energy and are spaced closely together |
liquid | state of matter where the particles have enough energy to slide past each other |
gas | state of matter where particles have so much energy they spread apart and fill the container |
mixture | a blending of two or more substances in the same container |
pure substance | a substance in which all of the particles are identical |
element | a substance containing only one type of atom |
compound | two or more different elements that are chemically bonded together. |
particle diagram | a diagram that shows the arrangement of atoms in a substance |
physical property/change | a description of how a substance appears or changes in appearance but but not in identity |
chemical property/change | a description of how a substance can undergo a change in identity due to the rearrangement of atoms |
mass | the amount of matter in an object |
conversion factor/conversion fraction | a fraction created from two measurements that are equal to each other which is used to convert from one unit to another |
factor label method/dimensional analysis | a calculation method that uses conversion factors to change from one unit to another |
