Question | Answer |
chemical bond | the sharing or transfer of electrons that results in atoms being "joined" together |
covalent bond | a chemical bond in which electrons are shared |
ionic bond | a chemical bond in which electrons are transferred, forming ions which then attract one another |
non-polar covalent bond | a chemical bond in which the electrons are shared evenly between the two atoms |
polar covalent bond | a chemical bond in which the electrons are shared unevenly between the two atoms |
molecule | a group of atoms that are held together by (covalednt)chemical bonds |
molecular formula or chemical formula | a way of showing the number and type of molecules that are bonded together using element symbols and subscripts, such as NaCl or CaCl2 |
octet rule | atoms will gain, lose, or share electrons in order to fill their outer shell with 8 electrons (except hydrogen) |
electron dot (Lewis) structure | a sketch that shows how the atoms in a molecule are connected and also shows the location of all of the valence electrons |
bonding pair of electrons | a pair of electrons shared between two atoms, represented by a dash |
lone pair of electrons | a pair of electrons that are not shared between two atoms, represented by two dots |
single bond | a chemical bond consisting of one pair of electrons shared between two atoms |
double bond | a chemical bond consisting of two pairs of electrons shared between two atoms |
triple bond | a chemical bond consisting of three pairs of electrons shared between two atoms |
polyatomic ions | a group of atoms held together by covalent bonds, but act as a unit as a charged ion which can form ionic bonds with other ions |
metallic bond | a chemical bond between two metals where the electrons move freely between all of the atoms |
