addend | Any one of the numbers added in an addition problem. |
angle | The opening between two lines or segments that intersect. |
area | The size of the inside of a flat shape. |
average | The number that would be in each group if the groups were made equal. |
bar graph | A graph that uses rectangles to show numbers or measurements. |
century | One hundred years. |
chance | How likely it is that something will happen. |
circle graph | A graph made of a circle divided into sections, sometimes called a pie graph. |
circumference | The distance around a circle; the perimeter of a circle. |
common denominators | Denominators that are the same. |
common years | Years with 365 days; not leap years. |
congruent | Having the same size and shape. |
counting numbers | All the numbers in this sequence: 1, 2, 3, , 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10,...(not fractions or decimals) |
decade | Ten years. |
decimal point | The dot in a decimal number. |
denominator | The bottom number in a fraction. It tells how many parts are in a whole. |
diameter | The distance across a circle through its center. |
difference | The answer in a subtraction problem. |
digit | Any of these symbols: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. Digits are used to write numbers. |
division bar | A line between two numbers that shows division. |
equals | Has the same value as. |
equivalent fractions | Different fractions that name the same amount. |
estimate | To carefully guess how much something is. |
even numbers | Numbers that can be divided by 2 without a remainder. Even numbers have 0,2,4,6, or 8 in the one's place. |
expanded form | A way to show a number by writing the value of each digit.(8,000+400+60+3) |
exponent | A number that shows how many times another number is a factor. |
fact family | Three numbers that can make four facts. (3+4=7, 4+3=7, 7-3=4, 7-4=3) |
factor | A number that is multiplied. |
fraction | A number that names part of a whole. |
fraction bar | A line between the numerator and denominator in a fraction. |
geometric solid | A shape that takes up space. |
graph | A diagram that shows, counts, or measures. |
greater than | Larger than. |
hexagon | A polygon with six sides. |
improper fraction | A fraction with a numerator greater than or equal to the denominator; a fraction that is greater than or equal to 1. |
intersecting lines | Lines that cross. |
leap years | Years with 366 days; not common years. |
less than | Smaller than. |
line graph | A graph that uses segments and points to show information. |
line segment | Part of a line. |
mixed number | A number made of a whole number and a fraction. |
multiple | The product of one whole number and another whole number greater than zero. (The multiples of 4 are 4,8,12,16,...) |
number line | A line that has marks labeled with numbers in order. |
numerator | The top number in a fraction. It tells how many parts of a whole are counted. |
octagon | A polygon with eight sides. |
odd numbers | Numbers that have a remainder of one when divided by 2. Odd numbers have 1,3,5,7, ot 9 in the one's place. |
ordinal numbers | Numbers that tell position or order. (first, second, third) |
parallel lines | Lines that stay the same distance apart; lines that do not cross. |
pentagon | A polygon with five sides. |
perimeter | The distance around a closed, flat shape. |
perpendicular lines | Lines that intersect and make square corners. |
pictograph | A graph with pictures of things being counted. |
polygon | A flat, closed shape with straight sides. |
probability | How likely it is that something will happen. (Written as a fraction.) |
product | The answer in a multiplication problem. |
quadrilateral | A polygon with four sides. |
radius | The distance from the center of a circle to a point on the circle. |
reduced fraction | An equivalent fraction written with a smaller numerator and denominator. |
regular polygon | A polygon with all sides the same length and all angles the same size. |
right angle | A square angle. |
Roman numerals | Symbols used by the ancient Romans to write numbers. |
scale | A type of number line used to measure things. Rulers, clocks, thermometers, and many other things have scales. |
sequence | A list of numbers that follows a rule. |
square unit | A square with sides of designated length. Square units are used to measure area. |
sum | The answer in an addition problem. |
table | Information written in columns and rows. |
tally mark | A small mark used to help keep track of a count. |
triangle | A polygon with three sides and three angles. |
whole numbers | All the numbers in this sequence: 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10...(the counting numbers and zero) |
