Solution | A mixture that has 1 or more substances (the solute) dissolved in another (the solvent). |
Solute | The substance that is dissolved in a solvent which makes a solution. |
Solvent | The substance in which a solute dissolves to make a solution. |
Suspension | A mixture that has visible, insoluble particles in a liquid - like sand in water |
Concentration | The amount of solute to solvent in a mixture - like the amount of cordial (solute) in water (solvent) |
Dilute | To have less solute by adding solvent - you add more water (solvent) to cordial (solute) |
Insoluable | The solute CAN NOT dissovle in the solvent. |
Soluable | The solute CAN dissolve in the solvent. |
Colloids | A mixture where the particules of a substance float evenly in another - like muddy water. |
Emulsion | When one sustance is spread evenly through another and doesn't settle in a layer - like milk. |
Properties | Features or parts of an object or substance - Shoes have laces; rubber soles; leather etc |
Seperation | To divide a mixture or object into its different parts. |
Mixture | A combination of substances together. |
Filtration | A PROCESS or way of separating properties from each other - separating dust from air. |
Filter | A device that separates some smaterials from others - a face mask filters out dust from teh air. |
Decanting | A PROCESS or way of separting the different parts of a suspension by letting the heavy material settle to the bottom and pouring off the top solution - separating mud from water. |
Distillation | A PROCESS or way of separating substances through heating them - separating salt from water. |
