Question | Answer |
Evaporating | separates a dissolved solid |
Magnetism | separates a mixture of solids containing either iron or cobalt or nickel |
Chromatography | separates a mixture of coloured substances |
Filtering | separates a mixture of solid and liquid |
Distilling | separates a mixture of different boiling points |
2 steps of Distillation | evaporation then condensation |
4 steps of separating iron, sand and salt | 1. magnetic 4 iron; 2. Dissolve and filter 4 Sand; 3. Dissolve 4 salt to separate; 4. Evaporate 4 salt |
Magnetism explained | to separate iron filings from sand. Iron is magnetic and will be attracted to magnet / sand is not attracted to the magnet. |
Dissolving explained | salt in water. Salt will dissolve in water / sand will not dissolve in water. |
Filtering explained | sand from salt water. The salt water is a solution and will go through the filter paper / the sand will get stopped by the filter paper / sand particles too large to go through the paper. |
Evaporation explained | the water from the salt. The water will evaporate off, leaving the salt. |
Decanting | the sawdust and salt water from the sand. Sand is heavy and will stay at the bottom / the light saw dust will pour off with the water. |
Distillation | the water from the salt. The water will evaporate off, leaving the salt, then the water will condense again |
