sig. figs. | numbers that have been measured and have meaning. Only siginficant because they have be measured |
rule 1 | all nonzero numbers are significant(12345-five sig. figs.) |
rule 2 | zero in beween sig. figs are significant 2-000-3 |
rule 3 | leading zeros after a decimal are NOT significant (only place holders) |
rule 4 | zeros that follow a decimal are all significant |
rule 4-A | sometimes trailing zeros are not significant (place holders) |
Math rule #1- multiplication and division- | an answer can only be as significant as the LEAST significant number in the problem |
Math rule #2- addition and subtraction- | you can only be significant to the LEAST number of decimal points in your problem |
large numbers 1 | list all sig. figs |
large numbers 2 | place a decimal between the first and second numbers |
large numbers 3 | count the number of places from the decimal point to the right |
large numbers 4 | multipy the sig figs by 10 raised to the number of places |
small numbers 1 | determine the amount of sig.figs. |
small numbers 2 | place a decimal between the first and second digits |
small numbers 3 | count the number of places to the left of the decimal |
small numbers 4 | raise the sig.fig. to ten raised to the number of places |
small numbers 5 | negate the exponent |
