Term | Definition |
Ratio | Two numbers with something in common; can be compared and written as a fraction. |
Dilation | To enlarge something or make it smaller. |
Scale Factor | To make a shape or object large or small by multipying it by a number. |
Similar Figure | A shape or object that has the same proportions, but may be a different size. |
Pentagon | A five sided, two-dimensional shape. |
Hexagon | A six sided, two-dimensional shape. |
Rectangle | A four sided, two-dimensional shape with four right angles. |
Triangle | A three sided, two-dimensional shape. |
Reflection | To create a new shape by reflecting an image across a line; a mirror image. |
Translation | To move a shape a certain amount on a coordinate plane. |
Transformation | Movement of geometric figures to new points in a coordinate system using reflection (flip), translation (slide), or rotation (turn). |
Rotation | Turning a figure around a point, (center of rotation is point). |

common factor | a number that is a factor of two or more numbers . Common factors of 2 and 8 are 1 and 2. |
composite numbers | numbers that have 3 or more factors |
congruent | figures with the same size and shape. Line segments that are equal in length |
diameter | the distance across a circle through its center |
dividend | the number being divided into equal groups |
end point | the point at one end of a line segment or ray |
