Sulfur | S |
Zn | ZInc |
What is a formula | Abbreviation for compound |
Group IA Elements have what Oxidation # | +1 |
Group IIA Elements have what Oxidation # | +2 |
Group VIA Elements have what Oxidation # | -2 |
Group VII ELements have what Oxidation # | -1 |
What does (I) or (II) after Cu mean? | Oxidation # |
What does (II) or (III) after Fe mean? | Oxidation # |
What elements have an oxidation number of 0 if they are in a diatomic molecule? | Cl, F, H, I, N, O, Br |
Does H have a Oxidation # of +1 or 0 in water? | +1 |
WHat is superscript? | Numbers up and to the right |
What does super script denote? | Charge |
What is subscript? | Numbers down and to the right |
WHat does is denote? | Atomic quantity with in a formula |
WHat are the first two rules for writing formulas? | 1. Write the positively charged element first and negatively charged second ( Parenthesis will denote charge) EX. H(+1) O (-2) 2. Find the lowest common denominator between the atoms ( In the example above, it is 2) |
WHat is the third rule for writing formulas? | 3. Multiply the subscript by the superscript. Do this by recognizing the common denominator then how many of each atom it will take to match it EX. H (+1) and O (-2), it will take 2 Atoms of H to match the -2 charge of O |
What is the fourth rule for writing formulas? | Make sure your charges equal 0 H (+1) O (-2)= H (+1) H (+1) O (-2)= H2O and charge = 0 Yeah! |
WHat is a poly atomic ion? | Groups as atoms that act as one atom |
How do you calculate charge of a polyatomic ion, individually or as a whole? | As a whole. Don't break these down, or you will have a break down. |
Ammonium | NH4 +1 (only positively charged polyion) |
Bicarbonate | HCO3 -1 |
Cyanide | CN -1 |
Hydroxide | OH -1 |
Hypochlorite | OCl -1 |
Nitrate | NO3 -1 |
Nitrite | NO2 -1 |
Carbonate | CO3 -2 |
Sulfate | SO4 -2 |
Sulfite | SO3 -2 |
Phosphate | PO4 -3 (only -3 polyion) |
Helpful Hint #1 | If a polyion starts with the letter B, H or N it will have a -1 charge |
Helpful Hint #2 | If a polyion ends in -ate it always has more oxygen than if it ends with -ite (EX. Nitrate (NO3) Nitrite (NO2). |
