Question | Answer |
atom | smallest object that retains properties of an element |
Plum-Pudding Model | each atom was a sphere filled with a positively charged fluid and electrons |
Gold-Foil Experiment | experiment to probe the structure of the atom |
Orbitals | an energy state in the atomic model which describes where an electron will likely be |
nucleus | central part of an atom that contains the protons and neutrons |
proton | particle found in a nucleus with a positive charge |
electron | one of parts of the atom having a negative charge |
neutron | particle found in the nucleus of an atom |
mass number | the sum of protons and neutrons |
atomic number | the number of protons in an atom |
ion | removing or adding electrons to an atom creates an ion (a charged object very similiar to an atom) |
isotope | element with the same number of protons but have different numbers of neutrons |
atomic mass | the mass of a specific isotope of a given atom |
valence electrons | the electrons in the outermost shell of an atom |
octet | group of eight valence electrons surrounding an atom |
excited state | state in which an atom or molecule picks up outside energy |
ionization energy | energy required to remove an electron from a specific atom |
electron affinity | the energy change that occurs when an electron is added to a gaseous atom |
electronegativity | measure of a substances' ability to attract electrons |
