Heterogeneous Mixture | A mixture that does not have uniform composition |
Element | A substance that can not be broken down into simpler parts |
Compound | A substance that can be broken down into simpler parts by a chemical change |
Solution | Another name for a homogeneous mixture |

Solvent | The substance that does the dissolving in a solution |
Alloy | A type of solution where one metal is dissolved in another |
Aqueous Solution | A type of solution where water is the solvent |
Physical Change | A change that does not alter the identity or composition of matter |
Chemical Change | A change that results in the formation of new matter with different properties |
Physical Property | A description of the physical nature of matter; does not involve a change in the behavior of matter |
Chemical Property | A description of a behavior; this property can only be observed when matter undergoes a chemical change |
Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space |
Phase change | A change where matter moves from one state (solid, liquid or gas) to a different state; controlled by temperature |
Element | The most specific and ordered class of matter |
Heterogeneous Mixture | The least ordered class of matter |
Volume | The characteristic of "taking up space" |
Mass | A measure of the amount of matter in an object; scientists prefer this measurement because it is constant |
Weight | A measure of the gravitational pull on an object; changes with position on the earth |
Endothermic | A type of energy change where energy must be put into (or absorbed by) the matter in a reaction |
Exothermic | A type of energy change where energy is released by the matter in a reaction |
Hydrolysis of water | An example of an endothermic reaction |
Whoosh Bottle | An example of an exothermic reaction |
Law of Conservation of Matter | Matter can never be created nor destroyed |
Chemical Formula | The combination of chemical symbols that describes the composition of a chemical compound |
Chemical Symbol | 1 or 2 letter abbreviation that represents an element |
Quantitative Observation | an observation that makes use of a measurement |
Qualitative Observation | an observation that uses word descriptions |
