| Question | Answer |
| variable | A letter or symbol used to represent a number. |
| order of operations | The order in which one performs mathematical operations. GEMDAS (Grouping, Exponents, Multiplication/Division, Addition/Subtraction) |
| evaluate | To find the value of a numerical or algebraic expression (solve) |
| parentheses | A pair of symbols used to set apart parts of a problem so that those parts are done first, example ( ). |
| expression | A math sentence containing only numbers, symbols, and operations (Ex: 3 x 2 + 4 - 1) |
| pattern | Things that are arranged following a rule or rules. |
| brackets | [ ], grouping symbols, A pair of symbols used to enclose sections of an expression. |
| braces | A pair of symbols used to set apart parts of a problem so that those parts are done first, example { }. |
| unknown | the answer that is not known |
| coordinate plane | A coordinate system formed by the intersection of a horizontal number line, called the x-axis, and a vertical number line, called the y-axis. |
| coordinate | A number that determines the position of a point in one direction on a grid. |
| x-axis | the horizontal number line in a coordinate plane |
| y-axis | the vertical number line in a coordinate plane |
| origin | (0,0) The starting point on a graph. |
| x-coordinate | The horizontal value in a pair of coordinates (how far along the point is). Always written first in an ordered pair (x, y). |
| y-coordinate | The vertical value in a pair of coordinates (how far up or down the point is). Always written second in an ordered pair (x, y). |
| equation | A mathematical sentence that shows that two expressions are equivalent. |
| first quadrant | The region in which the x and y coordinates are both positive. This is the upper right section of a 4 part coordinate plane. |
| ordered pair | A pair of numbers that can be used to locate a point on a coordinate plane. Ex: (3,5) |
| interval | The distance between one number and the next on the scale of a graph. |
| axes | Plural of axis. The x and y lines that cross at right angles to make a graph. |
| operations | mathematical processes (Add, Subtract, Multiply, Divide) |
