| Term | Definition |
| Analytical Chemistry | Involves the application of techniques and methods to obtain and assess qualitative, quantitative, and structural information on the nature of matter. |
| Classical Technique | also termed wet chemical analysis, consists of those analytical techniques that use no mechanical or electronic instruments other than a balance. |
| Instrumental Technique | It includes techniques such as spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, crystallography, electrochemical analysis, thermal analysis, separations, and microscopy. |
| Technique | are chemical or physico-chemical processes that provide the basis for analytical measurements. |
| Method | a detailed set of instructions for a particular analysis using a specified technique. |
| Gravimetry | weight of pure analysis or compound of known stoichiometry |
| Titrimetry | volume of standard reagent solution reacting with the analyte |
| Spectroscopy | wavelength of radiation emitted or absorbed by the analyte |
| Mass Spectrometry | mass of analyte or fragments of it |
| Chromatography | various physico-chemical properties of separated analytes |
| Electrochemical Analysis | electrical properties of the analyte in solution |
| Analyte | component of interest in the sample |
| Matrix | collection of all the components in the sample |
| Procedure | a set of written instructions on how to apply a method to a particular sample |
| Protocol | set of written guidelines for the analysis of a sample specified by an agency |
| Sampling | process of collecting a small amount of a material whose composition represents the bulk of the material being sampled |
| Aliquot | portion of a solution subjected to analysis |
| Blank | a sample that contains all the components of the matrix except the analyte |
| Signal | an experimental measurement that is proportional to analyte concentration |
| Linear Regression | a mathematical technique for fitting an equation, such as that for a straight line, to experimental data |
| Validation | process of verifying that a procedure yields acceptable results |
