Term	Definition
Aorta	carries blood from the heart to the circulatory system
Left Ventricle	Left ventricular contraction forces oxygenated blood through the aortic valve to be distributed to the entire body
Right Ventricle	accepting venous blood and propelling it to the lungs where it is oxygenated and its CO2 eliminated
Left Atrium	receives blood full of oxygen from the lungs and then empties the blood into the left ventricle
Right Atrium	receives oxygen-poor blood from the body and pumps it to the right ventricle
Coronary Artery	provide the main blood supply to the heart
Apex	helps pump or “wring out” blood from the ventricles to the rest of the body
Superior Vena Cava	return deoxygenated blood to the heart from the head and arms
Inferior Vena Cava	collect deoxygenated blood from your whole body and bring it back to your heart for new oxygen
Pulmonary Artery	carry oxygen-poor blood from your heart to your lungs
Pulmonary Veins	carrying oxygenated blood from the lungs back to the left atrium of the heart
Cordae Tendinea	strong, fibrous connections between the valve leaflets and the papillary muscles
Papillary Muscles	prevent inversion or prolapse of these valves on systole (or ventricular contraction)
Septum	It forms a barrier in the four-chamber of heart
Tricuspid Valve	to control the flow of blood from your heart's top chamber (right atrium) to the bottom chamber (right ventricle)
Bicuspid/Mitral Valve	regulates blood flow from the upper left chamber (left atrium) into the lower left chamber (left ventricle)
Aortic Semilunar Valve	ensure that oxygen-rich blood does not flow back into the left ventricle
Pulmonary Semilunar Valve	allowing deoxygenated blood to leave the right ventricle and flow to the lungs via the pulmonary artery
Brachiocephalic Artery	one of the three great vessels of the aortic arch that supplies blood to the head, neck and upper extremities
