| newton’s law of restitution | the coefficient of restitution (e) between two particles = speed of separation of particles / speed of approach of particles e will always be between 0 and 1, though that range can be specified via the conservation of momentum |
| coalesced objects | have an e value of 0 between them and will be at rest once they collide |
| collisions against a wall | e = speed of rebound / speed of approach to a wall |
| regarding kinetic energy | the loss of kinetic energy (practically due to sound/heat) can be figured out using the coefficient of restitution and the conservation of momentum |
| successive direct impacts | each impact is treated as a separate case where the directions of each object before/after an impact is important, especially when the range of e/if another impact will happen is questioned |
