Question | Answer |
endothermic | a chemical reaction or process in which a greater amount of energy is required to break the existing bonds in the reactants than is released when new bonds form in the product of molecules |
exothermic | a chemical reaction or process in which more energy is released than required to break bonds in the intial reactants |
law of conservation of energy | states than in any chemical reaction or physical process energy may change from one form to another but its neither destroyed or created |
heat | a form of energy that flows from a warmer object to a coller object |
specific heat | the amount of heat required to raise the remperature of one gram of a given substance by one degree of celsius |
enthalpy | the heat content of a system at a constant pressure |
more heat of fusion | the amount of heat required to melt one mole of a solid substance |
more heat of vaporization | the amount of heat required to vaporize one mole of a liquid |
rate law | the mathematical relationship between the rate of a chemical reaction at a given temperature and the concentration of reactants |
collision theory | states that atoms, ions, molecules must collide in order to react |
activation energy | the minimum amount of energy required by reaction particles in order to form the activate complex and lead a reaction |
catalyst | a susbstance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction by lowering activation energies but not itself consumed in the reaction |
chemical equilibrim | the state in which forward and reverse reactions balance each other because they occur at equal weights |
le chatlier principle | states that if stress is applied to a system at equilibium, the system shifts in the direction that relieves the stress |
entropy | a measure of anumber of possiple ways that the energy of a system can be distributed, related to the freedom of the systems particles to move and the number of ways they can be aranged |
