| Separation of powers | A doctrine of constitutional law under which 3 branches of government are kept separate |
| Checks and Balances- | A system in which the different parts of an organization (such as government) have powers that affect and control the other parts so that no part can become that powerful |
| Federalism | The division and sharing of powers between the national and state governments. |
| Republicanism | A theory of government that emphasizes the participation of citizens for the common good of the community |
| Limited Government | A theory of governance in which the government only has those powers delegated to it by the law, often through a written constitution |
| Popular Sovereignty | Government based on the consent of the people |
| Tyranny | A cruel,harsh, and unfair government in which a person or small group of people have power over everyone else. |
| Factious | Given to faction; divise;inclined to separate |
| Conflagration | A fire that burns over a large area and destroyed property |
| Delegated powers | Are powers granted to the national government under the US constitution |
| Enumerated powers | The powers granted to the federal government, especially congress. |
| Implied powers | powers granted by the US government that aren't especially stated in the constitution |
| Concurrent powers | Powers that are shared by both the federal government and state governments |
| Inherent powers | Those powers not explicitly stated in the constitution that allows the government to take actions, which are needed to efficiently perform essential duties. |
