Question | Answer |
solution | A homogeneous mixture. |
solute | A substance dissolved in a solvent to form a solution. |
solvent | The dissolving medium in a solution. |
molarity | A measure of concentration in which the number of moles of solute in liters of solution (moles per liter). |
solubility | The amount of a substance that dissolves in a given volume of solvent or solution at a given temperature. |
aqueous solutions | Solutions with water as the solvent. |
insoluble | Does not dissolve in the solvent |
saturated | A solution contains as much solute as will dissolve at room temperature. |
unsaturated | A solution that has not reached the limit of solute that will dissolve in it. |
supersaturated | A solution that contains more dissolved solid than a saturated solution will hold at that temperature. This is a very unstable solution. |
concentrated | A large amount of solute is dissolved in a solution. |
dilute | A relatively small amount of solute is dissolved in a solution. |
dilution | The process of adding more solvent to a solution. |
miscible | "able to be mixed" |
osmosis | the process by which a solvent will flow through a semipermeable membrane from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration |
colloid | a suspension that generally has particles between 1 nm and 1 micometer in length in a solid, liquid, or gas |
Brownian motion | the constant motion of colloid particles caused by impacts from solvent molecules |
