| Geopolitics | The relationship of geography and politics |
| Maritime Geography | Related field to geopolitics where important maritime counties and places are located and the characteristics of the oceans ands seas around them |
| Ocean Basins | the five major world oceans: order by size is the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, and Arctic |
| Seas | Smaller, partially enclosed subdivisions of the oceans |
| Important Seas | Mediterranean Sea, Caribbean Sea, North Sea, Baltic Sea, Black Sea, Red Sea, Arabian Sea, South China Sea, Sea of Japan, Barents Sea, and Bering Sea |
| Gulf | Pockets of seas that reach into continents |
| Important Gulfs | Gulf of Mexico, Persian Gulf, and Gulf of Aden |
| Bay | Large body of water that opens into a sea. Ex: Chesapeake Bay and San Francisco Bay |
| Sound | Similar to a bay, except it connects two or more inlets or parts of sea, like Long Island Sound |
| Seaports | Harbors, towns, or cities that have access to the sea and contain facilities for cargo handling and ship maintenance. |
| Leeward Side | Side away from wind |
| Mid-Atlantic Ridge | An enormous S-shaped underwater mountain range that run roughly north and south down the center of the basin |
| Choke points | Spots that constrain the flow or travel of military forces and commerce |
| Greenland-Iceland-United Kingdom (G-I-UK) | Wide expanse of water between Greenland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and northern Scotland |
| Deepwater Horizon oil spill | 4.9 million barrels of oil escaped into the Gulf after the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon well in April 2010 and it was finally capped in mid-July 2010. |
| Panama Canal | The most important strategic spot in the Caribbean |
| Cuba | Largest island in the Caribbean |
